I guess it happens a lot.
Gruden wasn't fired, though.

Sports Illustrated had an article on retread head coaches.

Apparently, go #2 tends to be their most successful try. They've had the experience, they know what works and what doesn't, and they can avoid previous mistakes better. #3 usually ends up being a disaster.

That SI article touted Marty Morninwhig as a guy who may do well in a second go around.
