Maybe so, but his nmubers have been declining, he's missed 16 games due to injury in the last 4 years. He may be decent back-up.

I'm just mystified why this signing gets the attention that it does form the media.

Because we didn't have a back-up before signing him. We had McCoy and a bunch of mini-McCoys. Now we have a back-up who can run between the tackles, but also has the ability to catch passes. It adds a new wrinkle to our offense that we didn't possess otherwise. It's not akin to Asomugha, but it's a significant move by us and we just happen to be in the media spotlight at the moment.
