I don't believe it would be an extended OT in the regular season. You could still have a tie in the regular season. In fact, I think if a team has a lead, even by three points, at the end of a quarter, they would win. At least the other team had a chance to tie or win.
Well, now OT usually doesn't last very long. One team or the other scores within the first 5 minutes.

Rarely, they'll go a whole extra frame.

I'd expect that using the new rules would actually extend the average OT - it takes longer to score a TD than to kick a FG, and if you DO kick, the other team gets a shot.

So the average game - when they are stacked back-to-back-to-back - that does go into OT would be longer than they are now.
