Perceived value.

The fact of the matter is, Heyward-Bay got paid what he did because he was the seventh pick in the draft. If he was the tenth pick in the draft (like Crabtree was), he'd get less money. That's how the system works.
There is no system. That's how negotiations usually work. It doesn't mean that's how they always have to work.
