Default Landeta RETIRES
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Former New York Giants punter Sean Landeta has hung up his cleats as he announced his official retirement from football on Thursday.

Landeta started his professional career in 25 years ago on Thursday with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars of the United States Football League where he won championships in 1983 and 1984.

"I chose this day for a good reason," said Landeta. "First, on this day in 1983 is when it all started for me. On this date in 1997, my son Joey was born. Retirement is just another great thing to happen for me on March 6. This will be a great day for me to remember throughout my lifetime. As far as my future is concerned, I've had the opportunity to stay close to the game through the media, personal appearances, and speaking engagements. Hopefully this will continue."

However, the 46-year-old from Towson, Maryland is mostly remembered for the time he spent with the New York Giants. He joined the Giants in 1985 and played for the team until 1993, winning Super Bowls in 1986 and 1990. He also played for the Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. He last appeared in a uniform with the Giants, who signed him to back up Jeff Feagles late in the 2006 season, but his services were never required and he was subsequently cut. He did not play in the 2007 season.

"The Giants organization is where I spent the most of my time as a professional," said Landeta. "To be part of two Super Bowl winning teams with a franchise that has their history is very special to me. I will always appreciate everything the Giant franchise and their fans have done for me in the past, and as I state earlier, still do to this day."

He owns a career punting average of 43.3 yards per punt, which is second behind only Rohn Stark. His 284 games, 1,401 punts, 60,706 punting yards and 381 punts inside the 20-yard line are second to Jeff Feagles.
