Quinn reports to Browns after 'frustrating' contract dispute

BEREA, Ohio -- Brady Quinn doesn't want to do any more waiting around.
The Notre Dame quarterback, who agonized on draft day before finally being picked, signed a five-year, $20.2 million contract with the Cleveland Browns, ending a lengthy contract holdout the rookie called "tough" and "frustrating."
Quinn missed 16 practices while the Browns negotiated an incentive-laden deal with his agent, Tom Condon. They began talks in May, but didn't make significant progress until last weekend.
Before joining his teammates on Wednesday for a practice closed to fans and media, Quinn said the business-side of football was a difficult lesson to learn.
"It's awful," he said. "You grow up loving the game that you play and all of a sudden you're told you can't come in unless you sign a contract. There are so many things you don't understand."
Quinn's deal includes $7.75 million in guarantees. He can make a maximum of $30 million if he reaches salary escalators in the final two years.
After agreeing to terms on the package, Quinn flew in from Arizona and arrived at the Browns' facility on Tuesday evening. He signed his deal, met with Cleveland's other quarterbacks and took a conditioning test.
He's got a lot of ground to make up, and he knows he'll need to do it quickly.
"I don't deserve anything," he said. "I've got to earn a lot, not only with the coaching staff but with the team. That's something you understand as a rookie, you have to earn everything you get."
The Browns picked Quinn with the No. 22 overall pick in April's draft after trading a 2007 second-round pick and their first-round pick in 2008 to the Dallas Cowboys.
He's fourth on the depth chart behind Charlie Frye, Derek Anderson and Ken Dorsey. However, with Frye and Anderson having mediocre camps, Quinn soon could be challenging for the starting job.
Quinn said one of his goals is to start as a rookie.
"Without a doubt," he said.
During his holdout, Quinn was criticized by some fans who felt he should have been in camp on time like offensive tackle Joe Thomas, the No. 3 overall pick.
Quinn was asked if he felt as if he let anyone down during his time away.
"I hope not," he said. "You let people down when you lose and I don't think we've lost a game yet. We've still got high hopes. The focus should be on our team not on what has happened the last couple weeks."
Quinn does not yet know if he'll get any playing time in Saturday's exhibition opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
