So if he did all of this in the same state and never left, he wouldn't be as screwed as he is? Crossing state lines is such a minor thing in the crimes that he really committed.

My understanding was that the crossing of the lines was what took it from a state to a federal offense. State crimes are a lot easier to wiggle out of than federal crimes.
