I'm not discounting the Falcons D at all, they have been a huge reason for the Falcons turn around this year. Rod Coleman was the best player acquisition this past off-season (and yes I'm including TO in that).
Now let's look at what Michael Vick is facing here.
- He's learning a new offensive system
- He's the team's leading rusher, which is just as much a reflection of his skills as it is of Dunn and Duckett's lack of skills
- His wide receivers are: Peerless Price, Dez White, Brian Finneran, and Michael Jenkins
- His offensive line consists of: Kevin Shaffer, Roberto Garza, Todd McClure, Kynan Forney, and Todd Weiner. Yet people want him to be a pocket passer. What pocket? These guys couldn't block me, let alone NFL defensive linemen.
The only QB in the NFL that has a worse supporting cast is A.J. Feeley. Even the 49ers have better offensive personnel than the Falcons.
I don't know how many Falcons games you've seen this year, but I've seen all of them. Vick has the worst offensive line in football hands down. He's running for his life almost every play. I would be shocked if less than three O-line starters are replaced this off-season. The opposing defenses know his WRs aren't going to be able to beat one-on-one coverage, so the safeties are able to crowd the box and spy Vick. The only weapon Vick has is Crumpler, and while a very good weapon, one TE isn't enough to support an offense.
Is Vick Manning or Marino when it comes to throwing the ball? Obviously not, and he probably never will be. But even though he's not a great passer he's still a good QB. He does what it takes to win, and he's a leader. His teammates (both offensive and defensive) believe they have a chance to win every game if Vick is playing. This was clearly evident in the change in the Falcons when Vick came back at the end of last season. If you give this guy an NFL caliber supporting cast (especially O-line) he'll bring a Super Bowl trophy to Atlanta.
