but it doesn't take into consideration defense other than turnovers, i find it hard to believe that the top 12 were the 12 playoff teams

Actually, that's not true. I factor in points allowed, yards allowed, and 3rd down conversion percentage allowed. If you don't believe me when I say the top 12 were the playoff teams, I will find the link to my rankings the last week of the 2003 regular season.

As you can see, the 12 playoff teams are 1-12, and the Vikings and Dolphins are 13-14.
