JJ will rarely be guarded by the best defender on the court -- unless he really breaks out and is better than any of us imagine. And sure, he goes through some slumps, but they are few and far between.

My best comparison would be Wally Szczerbiak. Wally is a couple inches taller, but he too is nothing more than a shooter. Can't handle the ball and can't really defend. But he does well for himself when put in the right positions. JJ has a great midrange jumper and gives great ball fakes.

As for Steve Kerr , it isn't out of the possibility that he'll be nothing more than a 3-point shooter who comes off the bench, but he is taller, more physical and faster than Kerr ever was. I think he'll be a little more than that.

I don't think JJ is going to be a superstar by any means, but I think he'll be a productive player in the NBA. There are a ton of players who can't play a lick of defense, so that doesn't necessarily worry me, although he'll have to work his tail off to prove he can at least stay with guys. But look at our reigning MVP -- terrible defender.

Lastly, no one can deny that the kid has heart and is one tough cookie. From all accounts, including commentators, opposing coaches (Gary Williams and Roy Williams to name a couple) and opposing players, it has been said that he took the worst abuse of anyone they had ever seen. Roy Williams is even quoted as saying that he has never admired or respected anyone more than JJ because of all the crap he takes, yet keeps on playing his rear off. At least you know he won't buckle under the pressure because he won't be asked to do anything nearly as much as he was asked to do at Duke.
Most of the NBA's mediocre defenders could easily wrap up JJ. He can work as hard as he wants, but the level of athleticism in the NBA is so incredible that he'll always be many steps behind the competition. Set shots are all he'll have, and when he's on the court, teams will be very aware of them. I don't see him averaging more than 6-9 ppg for his career.
