Zamboni's break down and shit happens. look at Daytona 500 where the track started breaking down.
Few things here:
1) Weather issues dont count.
2) Vancouver has had how many years to prepare for these games? Shit does happen, no doubt. But there was NO contingency plan for a hydraulic failure in getting the arms out of the floor? Its
the
focal point of the Opening Ceremonies & whomever was in charge of THAT part of the show 'crapped the bed'. Does it have to do with the competition? No, but that and a death the day before dont make for GOOD first impressions.
3) Speaking of the luge track, there were concerns from a few countries prior to the Olympics even starting about the speeds being attained and Canada's lack of cooperation of letting other countries practice on it. To say the track wasnt at fault, and to blame the athlete, and then
shorten
the track and adding some MUCH higher walls, smacks of an attempted IOC whitewash to me.
4) As for Daytona, that track's up for a $20 million resurfacing in the next couple of years. That said, Im surprised it hasnt happened sooner. The salt air, heating and cooling, cars running over it at insane speeds. At
least
track officials recognized the potential danger and addressed the problem. The same cant be said by Olympic Organizers in regards to the luge track. And, yes, I know that drivers have died and THEN more 'soft walls' were put in place, the device to keep the drivers' head still, etc. were implemented but those drivers ARE still infinitely more protected than a virtually unprotected athlete lying on his back doing 90mph.
