Very sorry you are having to go through this. I've been where you're at and it's horrible.

Rest assured you are doing the right thing now, not AFTER something bad happens. As hard as it is, go in with him, hold him till he's gone, and let him go with dignity. I still cry when I think about my boy Colonel James and even catch myself sometimes second guessing when the guilt overcomes me, although I know it is just the guilt and not practical thinking, it's still rough.
