I'm so sorry for your loss... I know that making that decision is the hardest thing you ever have to decide to do with your animal... I had to have my boy Maxx put down back on July 4, 2010. He was around 14 years old, I had adopted him when he was 2-3 years old and I knew he was sick and dying... the vet thought maybe he wasn't that sick, but I knew he was. I wanted the vet to put him down because he was too good of a dog to suffer for one minute... but when it came down to it, that was the hardest thing I have ever done. You second doubt yourself and question yourself if you are making the right decision... but once you get past some of the raw pain, you know that you did what was best, no matter how hard it was.

Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I agree with Boogie, let him know you love him, and don't let him go out alone. Be there as he drifts away, and tell him how much you love him and will never forget him... that is what I did with Maxx. The scab does heal up a little bite eventually, but there will be a scar that will never fade, and a memory of a dog that will never leave your heart.
