I am so sorry for what are you going through. I, like Mollie's Nana, went with my family dog when it was time. I was only about 17 at the time, but I would have never forgave myself if I didn't go. Something about sitting there at the vet with him made me feel better about what was happening. I was stroking his right paw, and my mom his left as he drifted asleep. Of coarse my mother, father and I were sobbing. He was old and had cancer, but he will never be forgetten. Remember the good times with this dog, and remember al the joy he brought you. That's what I do. Often I think, "I hope my pup will turn out like Harley (my childhood BSD).
The scab will eventailly heal (like was said before).
Give yourself time to grieve. You and your family will be in my prayers tonight.
I wish you the best of luck during this difficult time.
