We had a Pit Bull x Lab named Rico we adopted. He was a great dog, easiest dog I ever trained, very loving. When he turned 4 his whole personality changed and there were warning signs it was going that way I realized in hindsight. He became "protective" of the house and scared a few friends. But he always quit the second I said so, so I thought we were ok.

He tried to attack a neighbor child he knew well. Later that night he did attack my son. Both were unprovoked. We put him down.

I had a "free to good home due to divorce" AB I took in off CL. He had issues, but I thought it was a young dog and a lack of training. He also bit a child almost a week to the day after we got him. The parents sued us for almost $30k for 4 pencil eraser sized punctures. In hindsight, I think he was always HA and that is why the family rehomed him. Wish they'd made the right choice rather than saying he was sound and great with kids.

You and your family did the right thing, no question. Try your best not to doubt that and remember there are lovely, sound, dogs out there for you to love.
