Thriver, with a twist
For those unaware of the term "Thriver", it is a driving club hybrid between a driver and a 3-wood, the purpose to hit the fairway on a consistent basis while sacrificing distance to some degree. Typically, a Thriver is 3-wood length, probably 12 - 13* loft, with a stiff'ish shaft to promote accuracy. The driver head is heavier than normal to account for the shorter shaft.
I tried one a few years back with no success at all. I hit high short moon balls, but the problem was I had no idea if I was going to hook the ball off the planet or push it 50 yards right.
Fast forward to today and I was giving my 10 year old daughter a lesson. A month back I bought her a Hagan Ladies driver from Dick's Sporting Goods and had the shaft cut down 2 inches. The specs now are 13*, closed faced, 42 inches, Ladies Flex. At the end of the lesson we had about 15 balls left over, so I grabbed her driver for fun and just wanted to see what happened. I hit all 15 within a 15 yard wide area, about 225 in the air with the range balls. Each ball would have been in the fairway or just off, and a decent distance (I figure about 245 total with real not range golf balls).
How the heck did this happen??? These specs are crazy, but they seemed to work for me. Has anyone else experienced this - a completely weird spec'd club that worked for you?
