I'm not hard core, but I won (through a strange set of circumstances) a set of fitted clubs a couple of years ago.

The guy fitting me for the clubs told me that if I was a serious golfer, well-fitted clubs would likely take 5 or more strokes off my game. Since I'm a hack, he said that actually fitting them would be a waste, and that they'd actually hurt my game more than help. So I settled for 1/2" longer than standard (since I'm over 6' tall).

I'd talk to a pro about it.
