Solar power doesn't represent a new era of power consumption, because 90-99% of the world will not be able to afford personal solar power, so it will be centrally allocated, as ever.
Oil companies aren't as thick as you'd like to make out, any monkey can see that oil does not make for a viable business outside of the immediate present. So their efforts (read: money) have begun to be focused elsewhere. Even the 'antichrist', Exxon, have come to realise this: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/14/bu...nt/14fuel.html

I think what is more telling is that oil companies aren't doing research into nuclear fission, I reckon they'd happily take solar power to keep nuclear fission out of the market.
