what features do you look for?

like I don't even know the crazy shit these come with. image stabilizer - that's only for video right?

image stabiilisers are a definate bonus.....but as you're using a tripod its not paramount

and also do I want a battery pack or are the battery lives of the rechargeable lithium batteries usually good enough???

camera batteries usually have a good life,and as for a battery pack thats something you could get at a later date
And do I want one that self cleans or one I can clean myself?

canon do the vibrating sensor feature,it does actually work
I want one that isn't too heavy because I have disc hernias in my neck.

if to go for a canon you might be looking at something like the 450/500 range
I have a canon lens, but a tripod is definitely a thought....mine is from wal mart

if you go nikon can i have your lenses?
