As far as I am aware it is usually a response to a dietary deficiency, particularly Vitamin B or K. It may be worth thinking of a change of diet, the range of dog foods out there can be overwhelming and they are not all suitable for every type of dog. Sometimes they are just bored or just not getting enough food.
Another possibility is the way you reacted when it first happened, if you made a big fuss you may have accidentally given your dog the impression that what it was doing was good, your reaction interpreted as a reward response to the behaviour as oppose to the response you intended - dont do that again its minging man!!!
