Our cats recognise their own names, but only if you say it in the right way.
For Max, our male Maine Coon, you have to give a short, sharp "Max!", and normally he takes notice, but I only ever call him that way if he's being naughty!
As for Tammy, our female Maine Coon, you have to call her in a smooth way, with an upward inflection. Even then sometimes she just tilts her ear at you, but won't look, as if she's just ignoring you.
They both also know "Dindins!" means dinner, if you say that, they both make a beeline for their food bowls!
