When I was growing up we had cats outdoors. My parents were big on the no pets in the house rules. They would wander off from time to time especially the boy cat. They always came back home though. Ideally I wouldn't want cats outside, I agree that they are much safer in a house. I remember worrying that they wouldn't get hurt from a car, or other animal all the time when they would take off.
