My cat used to wear a collar with an ID tag in case he managed to escape (which he does at times), but a couple years ago, he had an allergic reaction to something and scratched the fur and quite a bit of skin off underneath the collar. Of course, I took the collar off him for awhile so it wouldn't irritate the wound. Once he healed, I tried to put it back on him, and a few days later, he'd scratched himself up again. I tried getting a new collar in case that was the cause of his reaction, and he did it again. So, no collar for him now.
