I have one cat that has extremely thick hair and try to keep it thinned out, because they not only groom themselves, but both my male cats groom each other.. and hairballs are a way of life! They only eat dry food but don't really like the hairball variety, but when it is necessary, they just upchuck the food and hairball and are fine for a few days to a week. I know that that paste from the vet works but I don't have any at the moment.
