Special dry cat food that's formulated to prevent hairballs is good. I use Purina Indoor Cat Chow. Also brushing and combing daily will help to avoid hair accumulation inside your cat's tummy.
My cats eat only Purina type of dry food, and I have never seen any of them coughing up a furball, in 20 years. So I guess it works
