in the 70's, my father and I helped one of my sister's cars pass inspection by creating a new fender assembly around the driver's side headlight, with stiff wire, cool-whip containers and duct tape. the headlight was wired into the cool-whip container which was aimed by some forgotten method and the fender was completely duct tape painted light blue. my sister sort of bragged that she never spent more than $25 on a vehicle (prices at that time), but probably time lost due to malfunction and repair cost much more than that. one instance comes to mind where crossed battery wiring caused total permanent temperate restructuring of the vehicle
