I'm not sure it IS addictive. At least not in the true sense. It's certainly habit forming.... why? Because, if you like it, it tastes good. It's sweet, bubbly, cold, and EASY. It appeals to your senses more than water... it's sweet/flavorful, it bubbles, it smells good, it has color. And, if you're hooked on the diet versions, it's "guilt-free". There aren't many choices "dieters" have that give the same oral pleasure they crave (and remember) while still being acceptable on a diet. I can't eat chocolate cake, but I CAN drink a Coke Zero. I can't eat plates of spaghetti... but I CAN drink a Diet Sprite. I can't have ice cream... but I CAN have a Diet Root Beer.

I think there are plenty of reasons why people (women especially) have a hard time giving up the diet soda/pop... but I don't think it's related to caffeine.
