$500,000 houses are out of reach for most Americans.

Yeah, $500,000 is rather extreme, but most people don't need a house that costs that much anyway. It's also dependent on where you live. $500,000 in your state is probably fairly common, but jobs also pay significantly more in California to compensate for the cost of living.

$500,000 where I live will practically get you a mansion, but our cost of living is pretty low here.
