When Putin's reasons for slamming the US are more altruistic, I will lend his slams some creditability. However, his transparency reveals at least one hidden agenda.

Based on the political rumblings in the US, perhaps he is hopeful for a Vietnam-like withdrawal of the US from that region. That type of vacuum could be ripe for increased revenue into Russia based on sales of outdated Russian/Soviet weapons. With Putin's planned update of Russian weaponry hardware, Washington Nuclear Update, 27 November 2003, he could kill two birds with one stone - needed revenue and disposal of outdated weapons, to any terrorist who pays.

But, one should be careful of being outspoken against Putin. Recall Anna Politkovskaya, journalist found shot in the head in her apartment, Journalist Critical of Chechen War Is Shot Dead - New York Times, and one should develop a fear of plutonium.

Putin needs money into his fledgling economy. Putin: “What is the threat? Terrorism and fighting it” – spoon feed me more, Vlad.
