A poll back in 2004 said 21% of young people got their campaign "news" from the Daily Show and SNL. Sad.
Why?

Now, two media studies suggest that not only are "Daily Show" viewers well educated and informed about politics, but that they get at least as much real news from Jon Stewart as they do from Charles Gibson, Brian Williams or Katie Couric -- news anchors at ABC, NBC and CBS.

Last week, the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania released study results showing that "Daily Show" viewers are better informed than viewers of David Letterman or Jay Leno's late-night programs and that viewers of all three late-night shows know more about election issues than others who regularly read newspapers or watch television news.

"Daily Show" viewers topped everyone in a quiz about politics "even when education, party identification, following politics, watching cable news, receiving campaign information online, age and gender are taken into consideration," an Annenberg senior research analyst said in a CNN report.

The Annenberg study, incidentally, also found that "Daily Show" viewers "are 78 percent more likely than the average adult to have four or more years of college education, while (Fox News's Bill) O'Reilly's audience is only 26 percent more likely to have that much schooling," according to CNN.

On Wednesday, Indiana University telecommunications professor Julia Fox explained through the IU Office of Media Relations the conclusions of a media study of the 2004 broadcast news coverage she headed. (She was unavailable for further comment after a major media site linked to the study and it became national news.)

"The Daily Show," Fox concluded, is at least as substantive as traditional network news. Herald-Times articles
