These guys committed the ultimate screw-up when it comes to the use of deadly force - they tried to cover it up.

Even a legitimate self-defense shooting will land you in prison if you try to cover it up.

Tampering with the evidence (casings) and failing to report it was an incredibly bad move, and it creates the strong appearance of guilt.

Agreed, they should have learnt from their superiors in Washington that the biggest crime that everyone commits is lying about what happened, how many times are folk gonna be charged and tried for perjury an obstruction of justice before everyone learns?
