Just when one would think that there could not be any more crazy news about the oil companies, there is the Exxon story in that they are going back to court to get the 2.5 billion that they have been told to pay to the Alaskan people lowered to about .5 billion. Now there is the story of BP Alaska not keeping up on house cleaning chores.

Alyeska Pipeline searches for piece of tool stuck in pipeline

Anchorage, Alaska - The Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. is searching for a piece of a tool stuck inside the trans-Alaska oil pipeline. The company says one of its scraper pigs came apart inside the line last December between pump stations just north of Fairbanks.
Alyeska says most of the pieces have been found, but there is still a one-inch-wide steel ring measuring 20 inches in diameter that's missing. The fear is the possibility of the ring interfering with a check valve.
Company officials say that's not likely, but they are keeping an eye out.

BP faces new charges in corrosion

Anchorage, Alaska - BP Alaska is facing new charges concerning pipeline corrosion and federal investigators say the charges will become part of an ongoing investigation.
They come at the same time Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. admits that it has lost part of a cleaning device inside the pipeline and cannot locate it.
Richard Woolam, the former head of pipeline maintenance for BP's North Slope operations, refused to answer questions at a congressional hearing last September.
The hearings were prompted by a 200,000 gallon oil spill and partial shutdown of the Prudhoe Bay oil field last year because of severe corrosion of the pipeline.
"Clearly, in retrospect, this is something we missed," said former BP Exploration Alaska president Steve Marshall in September.
Now, more allegations have surfaced.
In a letter sent last week to the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, oil worker advocate Chuck Hamel claims he has "... uncovered evidence that Richard Woolam earned his ‘annual bonus' by personally saving BP significant millions of dollars annually by secretly substituting at times the liquid corrosion chemical inhibitor with ‘water' at the well-head injection points."
Hamel, who works for The Project on Government Oversight, said he's given the evidence to criminal investigators for the grand jury.
"It was a very idiot thing to do. He got his nickles and dimes and bonuses because BP saved a fortune and they gave him bonuses for saving money," Hamel said.
BP declined comment on Hamel's charges, saying, "We take all allegations seriously. We turned them over to our ombudsman, former federal Judge Stanley Sporkin. He will determine the facts and if necessary take action as required."
Meanwhile, problems continue to plague the pipeline. Just this week, Alyeska Pipeline Service Co. admitted it lost part of a cleaning device inside the pipe back in December.
Company officials said, "It's definitely something we are concerned about as a company, but from an operational perspective, again, not a high risk matter."
Hamel disagrees, describing this latest flap as "chaos," saying BP and Alyeska don't know what they are doing.
BP will seek to reassure investors about its battered reputation when it posts annual results and a strategy update tomorrow.
Analysts expect BP to report a significant drop in profits after six successive quarters of lower oil and gas production, despite soaring oil prices.
But the focus will be on the company's plans to restore confidence in its business following the series of high-profile mishaps.
BP announced last month that chief executive Lord John Browne would step down by the end of July, bringing his expected departure forward by more than a year.
