To succeed last night he had to turn public opinion around on Iraq, and I don't think he did that.
No, he doesn't have to turn public opinion around. He's the Commander in Chief, and thus it really doesn't matter a whit what "public opinion" is on the matter. The President is NOT required to follow "public opinion".

The Democrats are impotent on this issue, UNLESS they are willing to step up to the plate and DEFUND the war effort.

And the Democrats are too cowardly (and too politically opportunistic and self-serving, despite all their chest-thumping rhetoric to the contrary) to do that.

President Bush has simply thumbed his nose at the chest-thumping Democrats.
