He's a Republican for a start...

That's nothing but a label. Lincoln Chafee was a Republican too, but would you want him to be President? His voting record was just as left wing as Barbara Boxer. You can't base your vote on someone being Republican or Democrat. You have to look at their individual positions on the issues. When you only look at the party, that is how you get screwed.
