Most atheists come about that point of view one of two ways, the first is that they were raised by atheists, the second (and in my opinion more common occurence) is that they were raised by pushy religious types.
For most atheists it is a matter of going from one extreme to the other.
Fact is, however, if you removed all the bad, pointless, and evil parts of the bible you'd be left with a small pamphlet of platitudes. Now some people may really like those platitudes, and thats well and good, others find immense value not in the bible but the interpretation of the good parts which has come from it. But it is hardly some divine piece that everyone will find inspiring or an irrefutable moral guide.
