I don't think we can use the past as an example for this instance. This is the first time in history where the mass of people live without having to grow/make their own food or having any direct relation/interaction with how their way of lives are produced, maintained, or managed.

That's a valid point, but the future continues to hold the one bright advantage, which is that it will always be able to draw upon the discovered knowledge of the past thousand years, even if it requires some difficult trials. There will be plenty of "survivors" to exploit that knowledge.

I heard a term last week that nicely describes my outlook: I'm an ApocalOptimist.
