One thing to note is ALL fluorescent tubes emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation, new style and old. It is the fluorescent coating on the inside of the tubes that convert the UV radiation into visible light and gives them their name. If the coating is heavy enough most if not all UV is converted into a safe wavelength. If the coating is too thin, then UV can escape along with visible light.
