DHS Study Brands "Liberty Lovers" as "Potential Terrorists" A newly released Department of Homeland Security study entitled Hot Spots of Terrorism and Other Crimes in the United States 1970-2008 characterizes Americans espousing traditionally patriotic values as potential terrorists.
Yes, that's right. It's all in the report on pages 11-12, where it purports law-abiding Americans exhibiting any of these characteristics to be potential extremists and right-wing terrorists:

• Americans who "are fiercely nationalistic, as opposed to universal and international in orientation"
• Americans considering themselves "anti-global"
• Americans who are "suspicious of centralized federal authority"
• Americans who are "reverent of individual liberty (especially their right to own guns and be free of taxes)"
• Americans exhibiting a belief in "conspiracy theories that involve grave threat to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty and a belief that one's personal and/or national way of life is under attack"

The DHS vs. Our Founding Fathers! How far we've come. Do these characteristics sound familiar? They should to anyone who just celebrated the 236th anniversary of the founding of our country.
During the drafting of the Constitution John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington, all expressed strong "suspicion of centralized authority," "reverence for individual liberty," and beliefs that there were persistent "grave threats to national sovereignty and/or personal liberty."
Yet now the federal government from which our Founding Fathers hoped to protect citizens considers the characteristics of its founders to be indicators of terrorism. Perhaps the Department of Homeland Security should investigate the possibility that our Founding Fathers were, in fact, terrorists.
This Is Not an Isolated Incident –
Contempt for Liberty Dominates Washington As much as I wish this were simply an isolated incident, it is not. The federal government has recently generated an alarming number of documents and press conferences with similar assertions.
An FBI press conference in February 2012 warned the public of anti-government "extremists" who believe that "the United States went bankrupt by going off the gold standard." The press conference went on to vilify these "extremists" who believe in sound monetary policy, and even describing how these citizens pose a serious threat to the IRS, all the while neglecting to cite a single credible threat.

Similarly a Department of Justice manual entitled Investigating Terrorism and Criminal Extremism lists those who attend "preparedness expos," possess "Constitutional money" (that is, gold or silver), and "Constitutionalists" directly alongside Al Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah members as potential terror threats.
The same manual also cites economic sabotage, which it defines as "a term often employed by extremists... to mean a clandestine action carried out to cause financial loss to a victim," as a tool of the extremists such as the Constitutionalists it rails against.
In a twist of irony the federal government, an entity whose inflationary monetary policies can only be described as the king of "clandestine action carried out to cause financial loss," wants to associate Constitutionalists, gold, and silver with economic sabotage!
Another document that was released by the FBI Phoenix office urged citizens and law enforcement officers to call the Joint Terrorism Task Force if they encountered "defenders of the US Constitution against federal government and UN" as well as citizens who "make numerous references to the US Constitution."
A Department of Homeland Security assessment entitled Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment expresses even more stunning sentiments. The document suggests that rightwing extremists are often concerned with "the perceived loss of U.S. jobs in the manufacturing and construction sectors." Not the loss of jobs, the perceived loss! This document was written in 2009 when reported unemployment first rose into the 10% range.
The document continues saying, "Many rightwing extremists are antagonistic toward the new presidential administration and its perceived stance on a range of issues, including immigration and citizenship, the expansion of social programs to minorities, and restrictions on firearms ownership and use." The assessment even has the audacity to list military veterans as potential threats to the country.
Paradoxically, this very same document that characterizes protected political speech and ideas as "extremist behavior" claims a major issue in the recruitment of these "extremists" has been "perceived government infringement on civil liberties."
One document even went to far as to specifically list libertarians and Ron Paul supporters as likely extremists of whom law enforcement officers should be particularly watchful. The highly controversial document released by the Missouri Information Analysis Center entitled The Modern Militia Movement, states "Militia members most commonly associate with 3rd party political groups. It is not uncommon for militia members to display Constitutional Party, Campaign for Liberty, or Libertarian material. These members are usually supporters of former Presidential Candidate: Ron Paul, Chuck Baldwin, and Bob Barr."
As the number of these documents released continues to increase, their attacks are becoming increasingly pointed. This is the first document to specifically single out specific political support (a Constitutionally protected right, no less) as an indicator of extremism.
While government vilification of those who believe in limited government is increasing at an alarming rate, the practice has been going on for quite some time now.
An Alabama DHS document released in 2006 entitled Anti-Government Groups proclaimed that certain terrorists "claim that the U.S. government is infringing on their individual rights and/or that the government's policies are criminal and immoral. Such groups may hold the current government is violating the basic principles laid out by the US Constitution." The document also asserts that the with many domestic terrorist groups, "the theme is always the same. Big [government] is bad... our government in particular is using its power immorally."
Why Domestic Spying Is on the Rise, Big-Time Let's not forget that these documents are only the small fraction that have slipped through the cracks and been unclassified. The federal government is systematically putting into place all of the requirements for a true police state, right under our very noses.
A police state where nationalistic orientation is cause for suspicion. A police state where being "suspicious of centralized federal authority" is the sign of potential terrorist activity. And worst of all a police state where "reverence for individual liberty" is not tolerated.
Our Founding Fathers would have been horrified. I know I am.
