Money is not uniform ... different places, different prices.
At one time I could get a bagel and cream cheese at a Hardys in the quad cities for $.59. At Galesburg the price was $1.09. At Peoria the price was $1.59. All in the space of a 2 1/2 hour drive.
At Peoria a skilled tradesman could earn $100,000 easily. Merchants knew there was money in the local economy. They do sensitivity studies all the time.
