There is probably a computer program already in existence to solve this:

1) scan pieces in big batches
2) run through "puzzle program"
3) visually reconstruct on the computer screen
4) verify serial numbers
5) Done!

I bet the facial recognition specialists in Vegas could handle this in no time.
