Huh? So it was "solved" but not solved?

I still hold to the idea that the core is spinning slighty differently from the crust, so there are certain solid-to-solid interfaces where the grinding is occurring... making a groaning trumpet sound. Imagine a freight train moving 100 miles per hour down the tracks and then locking up all the brakes. The screech of steel and the vibration through the ground would be a miniature version of what could be happening in the earth.
