There have been a series of inventions over the past few decades that would drastically cut fuel consumption and either the patents were bought out and shelved or the inventors comitted suicide.

There is another angle to this issue that I wonder about... Most of us agree that as far as the world economy is concerned, we are really screwed and there is nothing that could generate a recovery.

If TPTB wanted an economic recovery for some reason, they could unleash all the suppressed energy saving devices they have buried and the resulting lower cost of energy (short term anyway) would generate a surprise recovery.
