Exactly. I try to tell people this, but who, in a world of lottery and office football pools, gives a flying fuck? Nobody wants to be known as the guy who picked the candidate (team, AI contestant, etc) who didn't win.

Explains why the media is constantly harping about the "standings".
Note Mittens' 'rise'.

As for the 'I want the winning horse' meme, there's the phenomenon I've noted where people not only 'want to be betting on the winning horse', they also want to be 'near' 'the winning horse', i.e. see him up close, perhaps shake his hand, and be able to say later, "I got to see him upclose on the campaign trail!" I find it very strange how the rubes (and I used to be one 'cause I was drawn to a Carter appearance in Ft. Worth in '76 for that specific reason) are drawn to "some of the most important people on the planet" (as a woman friend said to me describing some of her friends hobnobbing with the likes of GHWB, McCain, Palin, etc. - it made me want to puke). Anyway, I'm seeing this phenomenon happen with Mittens the Mormon Illuminaughty, people wanting to be 'near' him 'cause he's the 'winning horse'.
