In addition to what Knock-on said, keep in mind that it's blummin' cold out there at the moment. The movement of the tread on the inters means they heat up a lot quicker.
Yep, it's going to be one of the issues of the 2009 season, drivers getting their tyres up to operating temperature. Slick tyres do offer more grip than grooved, but only when they have a much bigger variance in performance according to the temperature.

It's something we haven't seen so much in recent years but I remember races on slicks back in the day where a driver already on track would have about a laps advantage on a car just exiting the pits who's tyres were not yet fully warmed up, despite tyre warming blankets.
