Exactly. These are the possible issues. The pro's are obvious.
You can choose to tattoo instead, but most vets/shelters don't check for a tattoo, so it might go unnoticed. You can brand, but it will affect your dogs looks (make your dog ugly, lol), if that matters to you.

Personally both my dogs are chipped and no problems yet; the risks don't appear to be very high, and no method is perfect.
