I agree with either the little dog or maybe a small hound, like a beagle. Hounds are generally great barkers/watchdogs. I have a beagle/cur mix and he is an excellent watch dog. He doesn't bark at random stuff, only when people are coming up our driveway, lingering in front of our house, or in our yard. He's very alert--recognizes neighbors and doesn't mouth off to them.

The great thing about either of these two choices--Little dogs raised with larger dogs and not treated like pampered dolls generally tend to have a more balanced temperament. And you really can't go wrong with a hound, especially a beagle. They're dog friendly, like to be in a pack, and are very sweet and lovable. Plus, there are tons of beagles in rescue!
