Didn't really read the rest of the thread, just wanted to clarify something. The vaccine does not prevent transmission or infection, it simply lessens the symptoms. A dog vaccinated against kennel cough is less likely to become severely ill, such as succumbing to pneumonia. Kennel cough can also be contracted through a bacteria (Bordetella bronchiseptica); the intranasal vaccine helps protect against the bacterial and viral agent, the injectable vaccine only protects against the viral agent (canine parainfluenza virus). Thus, in the case of kennel cough, it does not hurt to treat with an antibiotic; it is not possible nor necessary to differentiate between bacterial and viral causal agents. Basically, you treat the symptoms, and possibly the bacteria, with antibiotics and cough suppressants.
