Sand or pea gravel sounds good to me! Honestly wood is a terrible idea, not only is it something for the dog to eat and get obstructed, but it'll retain an awful pee smell.

The best grass in our yard is in the dog run, it's up to diesels chest since I mowed it 2 weeks ago, but the morons do enjoy Munching on it.
