Am I just to resign to the idea "I have a dog, I can't have nice things" or is there something out there?

You can have nice things! Nice slobbery, fur covered things

I have used a similar set up in the past to what Kit mentioned... I used a GIANT turkey roasting pan that I put the water bowl on the far side of, in an attempt to catch the massive amounts of drool and water they create. I swear, half the water they drink falls right back out... only a lot slimier, and with bits of grass
