I used to walk Nitro at night all the time, every night. One night in September we were walking along our usual path when a guy came toward us out of the trees. He appeared quite suddenly and Nitro freaked right out; he ran like the devil was on his tail, and since he was on his leash *I* had to run like the devil was on MY tail! He didn't even stop to sniff at the fence where some other dogs live, like he usually does.

Ever since then he's been hyper-alert in the dark and very protective. If he's out in the yard for a pee and he hears someone walking down the alley, or any sort of noise outside he becomes very alert and will even bark.

So yeah, your dog isn't the only one who gets spooked at night. Mine was fine until that one incident. He's never been afraid of people and still isn't but if it's dark out and he's outside he's certainly more on guard than any other time.
